Owen Curtin

Owen Curtin has been a a sound engineer for over 15 years.  In the last year he has worked many notable artiest including David Gray, Keane, Amanda Palmer and Jordan Knight. Owen began recording music in mid 90s while living and playing music in Burlington VT. He recorded two albums with his former band mates, Greg Stukey, Rama Gotfried and Brian Lauri. After recording their second record with Deva Racusin at Chuck Eller’s studio in VT, Owen was inspired to start developing a studio of his own. His assembled a small collection of equipment and started to record friends including Aram Bedrosian. After moving to Boston in 2000, Owen was hired to work at Emerson College, maintaining the studios and assisting students. At Emerson, Owen also worked as an engineer for the Live Mix program at WERS where he recorded and mixed live bands for on-air performances.

In 2001, Owen began to freelance at Sonic Studios in Charleston, MA under Henry Beckett. In this position, he mixed several film projects including Dirt Boy for director Jay Frasco and actor Luca Bercovici. He also recorded sound for Sierra Games including the PC game, Empire Earth. At Sonic, Owen worked with several local bands, including tracking and mixing Amanda Palmer’s first record with Brian Viglione as The Dresden Dolls.

After completing his BA in Media Arts in 2002, Owen left his staff position for a teaching positions at Emerson College and the New England Institute of Art.  For information on the classes he teaches, visit www.owencurtin.com and for private instruction see the services section of this site. While teaching full-time Owen continued to work on recording projects with local Boston talent and work on sound-art installation projects. His work on the 2007 and 2008  Soundscape installations was highly acclaimed.   In 2008, he opened The Mix Hut studio in central sq where he worked on several documentary projects for Rebecca Gwyne’s and Bella Rose Films.

Late in 2009 Owen teamed up with Janos Fulop to open The Bridge Sound and Stage in North Cambridge. The new studio has offered him the opportunity to record with rock, jazz and classical music in the large performance space. He has continued to work with Amanda Palmer and developed new clients like  Christian Davis and Jordan Knight.

In 2010 Owen earned a Masters in Music Technology from The University of Newcastle Conservatorium. As part of his degree he designed and built a control room monitoring solution for the 500 series chassis. VUSum500 is available as a DIY project at vusum500.com.
